About Dr. David Lai
Physician. Global health leader. Founder of Tao Functional Health
I am a physician with more than 20 years of experience across clinical medicine and global health, including leadership roles with the World Health Organization.
My career has taken me through very different areas of medicine — from caring for individual patients to working with communities, health systems and international organisations. I have worked in settings where resources were abundant and others where even basic healthcare was difficult to access. Despite those differences, one principle has remained remarkably consistent: good medicine begins with understanding the person and the wider context of their health.
Over the years, I became increasingly interested in what happens before illness fits neatly into a diagnosis. Many people know that something about their health has changed — their energy, sleep, metabolism, digestion, concentration or resilience — yet no single symptom or test result explains the whole picture. That observation became an important part of the thinking behind Tao Functional Health and, ultimately, the Tao Framework®.
A broader perspective on health
Working across different healthcare systems has taught me that health rarely exists in isolation. Biology matters, but so do environment, lifestyle, nutrition, sleep, stress, physical activity and the circumstances in which people live. These factors do not operate independently. They interact, sometimes gradually over many years, influencing how well the body adapts, recovers and maintains health.
This is why I am cautious about reducing complex health concerns to a single abnormal result, a single diagnosis or the latest biomarker. More testing is not necessarily better medicine. The important question is whether a test, treatment or intervention is likely to provide information that changes what we do next.
The same principle applies when routine investigations are normal. Normal results can be reassuring and important, but they do not necessarily explain why someone feels that their health has changed. Sometimes the next step is not simply another test. It is to step back and understand the pattern more clearly.
Why I created Tao Functional Health
I created Tao Functional Health to provide something conventional medical appointments do not always have the time to provide: an opportunity to look carefully at a person’s health history, previous investigations, current concerns and the wider factors that may be influencing how they feel. The Tao Framework® provides a structured way of doing this. Rather than beginning with a predetermined protocol, we begin by understanding the whole picture, looking for meaningful connections and deciding what deserves attention.
Where further investigation is appropriate, it should be selective and purposeful. Where lifestyle or behavioural changes may help, they should be realistic and relevant to the individual. And where something is better managed by a family doctor or specialist, that should be recognised as well.
My approach remains firmly grounded in medicine. Tao Functional Health is designed to complement, not replace, your existing medical care.
Medicine before symptoms
Much of medicine is necessarily concerned with diagnosing and treating established disease. That work is essential. But there is another important part of health that interests me deeply: what happens in the years before disease becomes obvious.
Our capacity to tolerate physiological stress, recover from illness, maintain metabolic health and adapt as we age can change gradually. Sleep can become less restorative. Recovery can take longer. Energy can become less predictable. Body composition can change. The effects of stress can become harder to absorb.
Individually, these changes may not constitute a disease. Together, however, they can tell us something important about how health is changing.
This is the idea behind Medicine Before Symptoms™: paying attention to the trajectory of health, not simply waiting for a diagnosis.
The kind of medicine I believe in
I believe healthcare should be evidence-based, thoughtful and deeply human.
A consultation should give someone enough time to explain what has changed. Clinical experience should help distinguish what matters from what probably does not. Technology and testing should support medical reasoning rather than replace it. And ultimately, a person should leave with greater clarity — not a longer list of things to worry about.
That philosophy has been shaped by more than two decades of medicine and global health. It is also the philosophy I bring to every consultation at Tao Functional Health.
